Kathleen A. Balgley, Ph. D
A recipient of a Fulbright award, Kathleen Balgley taught in Poland from 1987 to 1989 at the Institutes of English and American Philology, first in Sosnowiec, and then in Wrocław. Her interest in coming to teach and live in Poland stemmed in part from her own background: although she was raised in the U.S. as a Roman Catholic, she became interested in the suppressed story of her father's birth and early childhood years between the wars in the shtetl of Brest-Litovsk, and wanted to learn firsthand the history of relations between Catholics and Jews in Poland.
An American educator for over twenty-five years, Kathleen Balgley received her Ph.D. in English and American literature at University of California, San Diego; her specializations include ethnic American literature, women's literature, Polish Jewry, composition theory and writing pedagogy. Dr. Balgley has taught a wide variety of student audiences during her career: from Native American adolescents to adult students in the California community college, from children at a private American Jewish Academy, to undergraduates and graduate students at UCLA, the University of California, San Diego, and at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where she became Associate Professor of English.
In American Corner Dr. Balgley spoke about her current work a book tentatively titled Letters To My Father: American in Poland, a memoir concerned with the role of the past in shaping personal identity.
