U.S. Embassy Opens First "American Corner" in Poland U.S.
Ambassador to Poland Christopher Hill and the Rector of Łódź
University Prof. dr hab. Wiesław Puś today cut a ribbon to
officially open the first "American Corner" in Poland. The Corner
will provide information about the United States to the general
public. It will be a venue for events involving visiting speakers,
exchange program alumni and American Studies and English language
teachers.
"I see the Corner as one more tangible sign of the strong ties
between the United States and Poland and between Łódź University
and the United States," said Amb. Hill. "The American Corner in
Łódź will be a great success and a bridge for mutual understanding
between our countries."
The American Corner in Łódź is operated in partnership between the
U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and Łódź University. It is located in the
Department of Management at ul. Matejki 22/26.
"The opening of the American Corner in Łódź is another step in our
ongoing cooperation," said Prof. Puś. "We are happy that Łódź
University is helping to establish the first facility of this type
in Poland. Even though it is located at our university, it will
serve everyone -- not only our academic community. It will help
expand knowledge about the American people and the values they
cherish."
"American Corners" is a public outreach initiative in which U.S.
embassies worldwide make available information about the U.S. and
develop program space outside of capital cities by partnering with
local institutions. The American Corner in Łódź will serve
students and staff of Łódź University, as well as the general
public -- the citizens of Łódź -- who are interested in the U.S.
More American Corners are expected to open throughout Poland in
the coming years.
The Embassy's Public Affairs Office in Warsaw is providing initial
and sustaining donations of books and other materials. Two
university employees will staff the "American Corner." |
